Nuts & Bolts: Inside a Democratic campaign: Plan to message critical race theory?

Welcome back to the weekly Nuts & Bolts Guide to small campaigns. Every week I try to tackle issues I’ve been asked about. With the help of other campaign workers and notes, we address how to improve and build better campaigns, or explain issues that impact our party.

Over the last week, there have been a lot of discussions in Democratic campaign circles regarding messaging.

Brian Williams roasts Matt Gaetz in hilarious comparison

We all have to deal with them. Some member of our extended family, or a co-worker, or someone we at a store who is just so incredibly wrong that at a certain point you want to throw up your hands and say, “Really? Really?” Enter Matt Gaetz. After testimony yesterday, Gaetz decided to go on the attack. Boy, did it go badly for him:

With Generals like this it’s no wonder we’ve fought considerably more wars than we’ve won. https://t.

Trump reportedly lamented that ‘the Blacks hate me’ in 2020

Republicans right now are wound up about critical race theory, arguing that teaching about racism, or that there are historical problems with racism are problematic and must be stopped. Why, with the passage of the Juneteenth federal holiday, Republicans would like to point to the fact that racism is clearly just a problem in the past.

How far in the past? In explosive revelations published by Politico, it appears not far at all.

Poll finds 40% of Americans who get their news from OANN believe in devil-worshipping conspiracy

When I was a younger man, I would walk through the store and laugh as the tabloids featured stories about “Bat Boy” and “Devil Child,” or stories about Bill Clinton being a secret alien, Ronald Reagan having been cloned, or George Bush Sr. conducting his own military runs in planes during the Gulf War. The Weekly World News and all the garbage fodder of the time period represented a more laid back era when people would laugh at the madness.

For my autistic graduate of 2021 and other disabled people, respect is due

When my son Augustus was born on Aug. 3, 1999, we chose his name in part because of the month, and in part because we had finished reading a book about Caesar Augustus, Pax Romana, and the stability that came from chaos for 200 years. Two years and a month after his birth, 9/11 hit the nation. Shortly thereafter, the extent of Augustus’ mental disability became more clear to us.

Republicans spend time attacking wearing face masks. Tough. I’ll wear whatever the hell I want

I am not a man of high fashion. I wish I could say that I spend my morning color-matching all of my clothing and making sure I’m wearing the latest trending product lines. There are a few things I do love: I like having a good pair of shoes because I’ve found it helps make my back hurt less. I enjoy wearing sweats almost everywhere, because damnit—I get to work from home, and if that isn’t a benefit of working from home, I don’t know what the hell is.

Ransomware and cybercrime are critical infrastructure issues

Last week it was revealed that Colonial Pipeline had been struck by a massive ransomware attack. Ransomware has one goal: to shut down the end user and demand money, often in the form of bitcoin, to pay for decryption codes. As cryptocurrency values rise and the ease of access to encryption tools grows on the dark web, ransomware has become a blight on American infrastructure.

Another Kansas Republican legislator arrested, this time for misdemeanor battery

The Kansas GOP continues to find the back seat of a police car a comfortable location for their elected officials. Yesterday, Rep. Mark Samsel was arrested on school grounds for misdemeanor battery. The Sunflower State Journal reported the details today. The school district is unable to comment further beyond acknowledging the event happened in an arts class for which Samsel was the substitute.

Nuts & Bolts: Inside a Democratic Campaign—when to let others talk instead of your campaign

If you have ever given money to a Democratic campaign, you will likely receive an email in the follow-up cycle asking for more funding. You can receive it off and on forever, from candidates you know and don’t know. For the most part, campaigns choose to automate these emails, using a digital contractor to help design and schedule them. The emails can be set around fundraising dates, days of the week, and frequency.

PragerU, the pretend university, makes money on YouTube by attacking trans youth

If you aren’t a university but you want to pretend to be one, YouTube is certainly a place to make it happen. That has been the standard for PragerU, the fictional creation of right-wing crank Dennis Prager.

On the eve of the #TransDayOfVisibility, the fake entity took to YouTube to offer a monetized piece of material that attacked trans youth and urged parents to reject their own children.

I can’t believe it but I have to admit, I agree with Laura Ingraham here

Laura Ingraham—the Fox News host who seems to spend all of her time thinking up new ways that Democratic efforts are a plot against America—had Kris Kobach, the disgraced Kansas secretary of state, on her program. Kris Kobach, for those that don’t remember, promised to prove vast voter fraud using taxpayer dollars, but only ended up spending millions of dollars and proving … well, nothing, while leaving states in debt for his actions.

Lindsey Thurmond—er, Graham—threatens a talking filibuster over voting rights

It was 1957 when Strom Thurmond took to the Senate floor to engage in the longest-standing filibuster in the history of the legislative body, doing so for just one reason: to stop black people from voting. HIs vile, over-the-top antics took to task a small step forward for civil rights under Dwight Eisenhower, a bill that was nowhere near as substantial as follow-up efforts in the 1960s.
